VIOFO A229 Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: Which Should You Buy?

VIOFO A229 Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: Which Should You Buy?

Quick Answer:

Buy the VIOFO A229 Plus if 2K front and rear is enough. Buy the A229 Pro if you want a 4K front camera with a 2K rear. Buy the A229 Ultra if you want 4K at both ends. This comparison covers the two-channel versions, and each model also comes in other channel counts.

Buy the VIOFO A229 Plus if 2K video at the front and rear is enough for you. Buy the A229 Pro if you want a 4K front camera and a 2K rear camera. Buy the A229 Ultra if you want 4K at both ends. This guide compares the two-channel (front and rear) version of each.

The short answer by need: the Plus is the lowest-cost of the three, the Pro puts the better camera on the front, and the Ultra matches the rear to the front.

The specifications below come from VIOFO's own spec tables, which we read on 2026-10-23. VIOFO's pages disagree with each other in a few places, and we note where.

A229 Plus records 2K front and rear, Pro 4K front and 2K rear, Ultra 4K front and rear.

Side-by-side: the three A229 models

VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH

  • Front: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP sensor, 2K (1440p), F1.8, 140 degree field of view.
  • Rear: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP sensor, 2K (1440p), 30 fps, F1.9, 160 degree field of view. VIOFO's rear listing prints the sensor as "1MX675", which looks like a typo.
  • HDR on front and rear.
  • Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, built-in GPS, voice control.
  • Not included: a polarizing filter (front CPL-200 and rear CPL-300 are optional), a hardwire kit and a microSD card.

VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH

  • Front: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8MP sensor, 4K (3840 by 2160), 30 fps, F1.8, 140 degree field of view.
  • Rear: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP sensor, 2K (2560 by 1440), 30 fps, F1.9, 160 degree field of view.
  • HDR on front and rear.
  • Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, built-in GPS, voice control.
  • Included: the front CPL-200 filter. Optional: the rear CPL-300 filter, a hardwire kit and a microSD card.

VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH

  • Front: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8MP sensor, 4K, 30 fps, F1.8, 140 degree field of view.
  • Rear: Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8MP sensor, 4K, 30 fps, F1.8, 140 degree field of view.
  • HDR on front and rear.
  • Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, built-in GPS, voice control.
  • Included: the front CPL-200 filter. Optional: the rear CPL-600 filter, a hardwire kit and a microSD card.

On all three, VIOFO lists parking mode support (auto event detection, time-lapse and low-bitrate recording), a supercapacitor rather than a battery, and microSD cards up to 512 GB. VIOFO's operating temperature range is -20 to 65 degrees C.

We have not stated a front frame rate for the Plus. VIOFO's Plus 2CH spec table says 60 fps, while other VIOFO pages for the Plus say 30 fps. Confirm it with us before you buy if frame rate matters to you.

What the resolution difference means

Resolution matters most when you need to read a plate or a sign in a frame that gets cropped. A 4K sensor gives a cropped frame more pixels to work with than a 2K one. How much that changes the outcome in your driving depends on distance, speed and light, and we do not have our own comparison footage to show here, so we will not claim a result.

Higher resolution also writes larger files. A 4K front and 4K rear pair fills a microSD card faster than a 2K pair. That is a reason to budget for a large, good-quality card with the Pro and Ultra.

Front-only, two-channel or three-channel

The A229 line also comes in other channel counts. VIOFO lists front-only (1CH) and three-channel (3CH) versions, with the third camera inside the cabin. We list the A229 Pro front-only as a separate product.

  • Front-only suits a car where routing a rear camera is awkward.
  • Two-channel covers both ends of the car.
  • Three-channel adds an interior view. Rideshare and taxi drivers are the usual reason.

What is not in the box

Every model above needs a microSD card, sold separately. Parking mode needs a hardwire kit, and the Type-C HK4 hardwire kit is the kit listed for these models. Glare control is a CPL-200 filter, which VIOFO includes on the front of the Pro and Ultra and sells separately for the Plus.

The "included" and "optional" lines above describe VIOFO's listing. The contents of the box we ship can differ, so confirm with us before you order.

Which A229 should you buy

  • A229 Plus 2CH: you want a front and rear recorder at the lowest cost of the three, and 2K is enough.
  • A229 Pro 2CH: you want the front camera to be the better one and treat the rear as a secondary view.
  • A229 Ultra 2CH: you want the rear camera to match the front, for example on a truck or SUV where footage of what is behind you matters.

Our VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH, A229 Pro 2CH and A229 Ultra 2CH pages list current availability and options. For hardwiring and parking-mode setup on the Plus, read our VIOFO A229 Plus review. For the flagship line, see the VIOFO A329S 3CH review.
